以And字開頭的句子

美國內戰接近結束，林肯1865年3月作第二次就職演說，文中有這一段：
Both parties deprecated war, but one of them would make war rather than let the nation survive, and the other would accept war rather than let it perish. And the war came.
Adam Gopnik認為最後四個字很有意思。「戰爭就這樣出現」，好像自然而然，亦似上天旨意，沒將發動戰爭的責任推到任何一方，這個And字有化解南北雙方仇恨的作用。
他也提到以And字開頭的句子曾經不被接受，會給編輯修改。小時候上英文課，好像也聽過此「戒律」。
其實此說法沒有什麼道理。以And或But作句子開頭，文氣上有轉折效果，不妨偶然用用。例如Agatha Christie的著名小說題為And Then There Were None，短短五字，已夠曲折離奇。
