「相為」的意思(嚴復《原富》N之二)

《原富》第一卷第三章題為That The Division Of Labour Is Limited By The Extent Of The Market，重點就在第一句：

As it is the power of exchanging that gives occasion to the division of labour, so the extent of this division must always be limited by the extent of that power, or, in other words, by the extent of the market.

有交換，就有分工；於是，分工程度視乎交換的空間，也就是市場有多大了。這是個重要的推理。

嚴復的翻譯很簡單，題目為「論分功交易相為廣狹」，第一句則為：

分功交易。相為用則相為廣狹。

「相為」兩字，就如成語「官官相為」，又如「不相為謀」，有互補、互相幫助的意思。意思大概是說，分功(分工)和交易，是為了從對方得到有用的東西，因此就視乎(市場的)闊窄。

原文的邏輯推理好像含糊了。
